SIGMM Carer Awards at MMSys’22
SIGMM is sponsoring carer awards for MMSys'22 to allow SIGMM members to fully engage with the online event or attend in person. These grants are intended to cover extra costs to help with caring responsibilities — for example, healthcare or childcare back at home or at the destination — would otherwise limit your participation in the conference. Recipients of this grant may be required to assistant the local organizers in the preparation, logistics and various supporting tasks of the conference. Carer awards are open to any SIGMM member regardless of the online or in-person participation.
Application Procedure
The application must be submitted online to the SIGMM system. The link to the system will be posted here very soon. Applications will be reviewed right after the deadline and the applicants will be notified in due time. As part of your submission, please let us know a fair estimate of your costs as well as how you arrived at that estimate. For example, you may use the average hourly rate for childcare where you live or the conference is.

Applicants and motivation
The diversity and inclusion chairs of the ACM MMSys 2022 are delighted to announce that ACM SIGMM are offering supports to strengthen existing initiatives to improve diversity and inclusion in the MMSys community. We know that restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have had a significant impact on many scholars, such as female academics, caregivers, young scientists and may have reinforced existing inequalities. Therefore, the diversity and inclusion chairs at MMSys2022 are accepting applications to support the inclusion of underrepresented groups at MMSys and raise awareness on diversity and implications of a lack of diversity are sustained and further strengthened. Applicants can apply for such supports should the address the key goals identified by the diversity & inclusion chairs.
Primary goals
- Provide travel support for people who self-identify as marginalized and/or underrepresented in the MMSys community and who lack other funding opportunities, as well as increase talent in underrepresented research areas (addressing weaknesses and nurturing new talent).
- Improve gender balance and increase awareness on diversity (addressing weaknesses).
MMSys 2022 will provide Travel support for (non-student) participants who self-identify as marginalized and/or underrepresented in the MMSys community: A primary goal for the MMSys’22 organizing committee is to welcome new faces to the community by supporting researchers who self-identify as marginalized and/or underrepresented in the community (e.g., scholars who come from non-WEIRD - Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Developed - societies) and who lack other funding opportunities to support their participation. This is particularly important as increased participation of scholars from underrepresented groups can trigger future research collaborations and lead to increased involvement of underrepresented attendees also in future editions of the conference. The travel support instrument is also particularly targeting earlier-stage researchers (e.g., post-docs, researchers) and applicants will need to justify the need for financial support. Students are not eligible as their applications will be centrally handled by SIGMM (please see SIGMM student travel grant opportunities above).
