Serving customers since the start of the 10th century, Sean's Bar is nor ordinary venue. In 2004 Seans’s Bar was declared not only the oldest bar in Ireland, but the oldest in Europe. This piece of Irish history is without a doubt a recommended stop as part of Athlone's rich cultural experience, serving some of the finest pints of Guinness in the region.
Built during the Norman invasion of Ireland under King John in the 13th century, Athlone Castle stands tall as the centerpiece of Irish heritage. Positioned on the River Shannon, the castle has a rich history which is to be experienced through the wonderful guided tour. Offering a 360° cinematic depiction of the Siege of Athlone during the Williamite War in 1690. The Athlone Castle is an experience not to be missed out on.
Situated in front of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Luan Gallery is a contemporary art space. Opened in 2012, the gallery proves opportunity to view works from renowned Irish artists. Lit by floor to ceiling windows which overlook the River Shannon and local marina, the Luan Gallery is a must stop during a visit to Athlone.
